At a glance
Ramadan brings strong demand for flights, accommodation, transfers and meal services. The last ten nights can be especially busy. Start comparing arrangements early, but do not treat a preferred hotel or departure as secured until you have written confirmation. Ask what happens if the named hotel or flight changes, and keep the cancellation terms with your documents.
Build a manageable rhythm around worship, meals, queues and sleep. People sharing a room may have different routines; discuss alarms, lighting and quiet periods before departure. Choosing the last ten nights is a personal travel decision, not a promise that every traveller will manage the same pace. This guide offers practical planning, not religious rulings.
How to plan
Check the hotel’s actual walking route to the Haram, the sacred precinct around the mosque, rather than a straight-line map distance. Ask which entrance the estimate uses and whether the route includes slopes, steps, crossings or long internal corridors. Nearby does not necessarily mean easy access for an elder or wheelchair user.
If a shuttle is included, confirm the boarding point, operating arrangements and alternatives when access is restricted. Allow generous buffers for airport and intercity transfers. Ask who handles changes locally, keep that person’s contact offline and reconfirm the meeting place before each journey.
Clarify what iftar, the meal at sunset, and suhoor, the meal before dawn, include. Ask where food is served, whether it is a buffet or packed meal and what happens if a transfer arrives late. Do not assume room delivery or special dietary provision. Identify an alternative meal option without relying on an unconfirmed service.
Arrange the required Umrah permit through Nusuk before heading to perform Umrah. A visa and a permit are different documents. If visiting Madinah, check the separate Rawdah appointment process. Use the current official instructions, and do not build your journey around a guaranteed appointment promised in advertising.
What to pack
Keep a compact daily bag, comfortable footwear for ordinary walking, a shoe bag and light layers for warm outdoor and cooler indoor spaces. Carry only what you can manage through queues. Save hotel addresses, confirmations and important contacts offline, and keep copies separate from original documents.
Take charging cables, a power bank, familiar snacks for meal times and prescribed medicine in labelled packaging. Discuss medication, heat and vaccination needs with a qualified clinician before travelling. Keep everyday essentials accessible during transfers rather than buried in checked luggage.
Travel safety
Crowds, heat and long periods standing can make an ambitious schedule difficult. Plan shaded pauses and meaningful rest, and be prepared to shorten an outing. Agree a recognisable meeting point away from the main pedestrian flow and a backup if phones fail.
Avoid stopping suddenly in moving crowds or pushing against their direction. If separated, follow your agreed contact plan or ask clearly identified staff for help. Confirm current health and permit instructions for your season; calendar-based Ramadan package matching is only a planning aid, not an official date announcement.
